How to stay connected while physical distancing

In uncertain times like these, it is understandable that people may be feeling isolated or anxious about having to remain in their homes for weeks at a time.

But just because we need to be physically distant doesn’t mean we can’t stay socially connected. 

To help make it a little easier for you to stay in touch with family and friends, we’ve compiled a list of free apps that you can use on your smartphone or computer, as well as some easy videos and guides to help you get started.



If you and the person on the other end both have Skype, you can call each other for a video chat. 

Skype is easy to use, and if you don’t have it on your phone, you can download it from Apple’s App Store or Google Play.

Facebook Messenger

If you are one of the two billion people who currently use Facebook, you should already have access to the Facebook Messenger app. If not, you can download it anytime from Apple’s App Store or Google Play.

Facebook Messenger is a great way to keep in touch with loved ones because it allows you to text, video chat and plan things all in the one place. You can even play online games together!

WhatsApp Messenger: 

Much like Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp lets you text, send photos, make a voice call or place a video call. Like the previous apps, you can download it directly to your smartphone from Apple’s App Store or Google Play.

If you and a loved one both have an iPhone or an iPad with a camera, you can use FaceTime to keep in touch. 

FaceTime is already built into most Apple devices, so you don’t have to worry about downloading an app or creating an account.

Although Zoom has traditionally been used by professionals, it can also be an easy way to bring all your family and friends together at once. 

Zoom is a digital platform that allows you to set up video conferences for multiple people. Simply sign up for free on their website and start inviting your friends (

Much like Zoom, Houseparty allows you to video chat and play games with those you are chatting to!

Houseparty is available on the Apple App Store and Google Play. You can also use the app from your computer.
