When you meet some of the Aveo Hunters Green retirement community residents, it does not take long to experience the mutual love of gardening that they share. In fact, many great friendships have blossomed through a love of all things green.
Almost 13 years ago, residents came together to form the Garden Gurus, the community gardening club which, at the time, was focused on growing and selling plants to fellow residents.
From humble beginnings with two boxed garden beds, the community garden has since grown to the size of an orchard. It is now home to citrus, apple and kiwi fruit trees, blueberry bushes, rows of vegetables, and more. The club has also grown to five residents, with three of the founding members still part of the club.
Each Saturday, the Gurus host a stall for residents to purchase fresh produce straight out of the garden. While plants are sold seasonally, residents are able to purchase fresh produce all year round and use them in cooking later in their own kitchen. All funds raised from selling the produce contribute to the Residents Association and maintaining the gardens.
