Aveo communities are filled with inspiring individuals from an array of backgrounds. Meet Suzie Lawson, resident of Aveo Newstead retirement village.
Could you tell us a little about yourself?
"My name is Susie Lawson and my husband’s name is Peter. We have one daughter, Jane, who has produced three of the most magnificent grandsons you could ever meet! Lachie is 11, Charlie is nine and Finn is six."
What was your profession prior to your retirement?
"In 2008 at aged 58, I retired from my position as Head of Arts at Villanova College, Coorparoo. I was the senior drama teacher there for 12 years. From 2008 when I retired from full-time teaching to 2017 I did supply and contract teaching at Villa and loved every minute of it. Pete, on the other hand, was in corporate finance and retired when he was 62. He has kept busy playing golf and proving himself a very reliable babysitter!"
What factors influenced your decision to move from your previous home and what made you settle on Aveo Newstead?
"For the past 20 years we have been living in a unit at South Brisbane and while we loved it there, circumstances have forced us to sell. As Pete’s health started to deteriorate last year I wasted no time in researching an alternative home for us. After meeting with a team member at Aveo, just four days later we had chosen an apartment and regard it as one of the best decisions we have made."
What hobbies do you enjoy?
"As I attend theatre productions on a regular basis, Brisbane Powerhouse is literally down the road and the other major theatre companies are very close by. Trying to keep fit is one thing that I attempt to do at least four times per week. Hopefully many residents will be interested in exercise and we can get professionals in to take classes. We could get up a walking group if people are interested. So much better chatting when doing exercise.
Name something that your new neighbours will be surprised to learn about you. Travelling is another passion of ours. In fact, we are now getting ready to pack our bags in early August for six weeks travelling around the UK with friends. We will be in Edinburgh for Pete’s 70th birthday with the restaurant there already booked for the big celebration."
What is it about the facilities at Newstead that you found so appealing?
"Everything is at our doorstep. As Pete is a golfer, being able to have virtual golf at his fingertips is a bonus for him. Level 19 is such a wonderful space to take advantage of the view, watching the sunset while having a sneaky drink. Having health professionals present lessens the stress of having to rely on family members to come to your aid. There is virtually something there for everyone."
What advice would you offer others thinking about entering a retirement community?
"Thinking about downsizing can be scary and quite overwhelming, but I can assure you it is extremely liberating. Getting rid of ‘stuff’ is like lifting a weight off your shoulders Just think of all the trips you can take. Pack your bag, shut the door and go. Nobody has to collect your mail and you don’t have to leave a light on indicating that someone is at home. There are so many advantages to community living."
