Sell-out success sparks final stage as Sunshine Coast retirees buck the stereotype

One of the Sunshine Coast’s most sought-after retirement communities is currently building its final stage of new villas following a complete sell-out.

The last stage of Aveo’s Sunset Palms Retirement Village in Palmview comprises 34 two- and three-bedroom independent villas, with the first release of 18 homes to be launched in March 2026.

These low-maintenance homes have been in high demand for their thoughtfully designed layouts and features that support retirees in living independently for longer. Some of the popular features include generous storage options, kitchens and bathrooms designed with accessibility in mind, no steps or trip hazards, secure attached garages and 24-hour emergency call systems, all within a gated community.

For Sunset Palms residents David and Moira Stone, the decision to relocate from their large Tin Can Bay home to a retirement village took friends and children by surprise – but the proof has been in the living.

“There’s a bit of a stereotype out there that retirement villages are full of old people knitting and tripping over walkers, but it couldn’t be further from the truth,” David said.

“One of the secrets to coming into a community like this is getting involved. If I look at my calendar and find a blank date, I think I must have forgotten to put something down because we live around such a fun group of people.

“My wife and I run a weekly bocce competition, which is always a great turnout because it coincides with pizza night, but aqua aerobics, arts and crafts, and mahjong are incredibly popular too.

“That said, if you don’t want to get involved, you don’t have to – some neighbours enjoy a quiet life here, and that’s okay too. You can opt in or out as you wish, and it never feels like you’re living in each other’s pockets because privacy is respected.”

David said the ease of living and sense of community were so appealing that even friends have chosen to relocate and become neighbours too.

“Friends of ours came to visit and have since moved into the community as well. Like us, they said if they knew how good this place was, they would have made the move years ago,” David added.

“Anything that needs repairing is quickly fixed by the village maintenance man, and once a fortnight someone will come in and do the gardening and lawns, so you don’t have to worry about that.

“Living in a gated community gives us peace of mind and reassures our children, so we can live our best life and continue encouraging other people to join us.”

Community Manager Alex Decorso said the people calling Sunset Palms home were not just local to the coast.

“Residents at Sunset Palms come from places all over Australia who want to embrace the Sunshine Coast for the lifestyle, or move closer to family,” Alex said.

“As you might expect, our residents have diverse life stories to share, love to bring their interests into the community and can always find a special occasion to celebrate. Although many residents have downsized from their family homes, they have expanded their social lives, involvement in activities, and overall health and wellbeing.

“This last stage of new villas will complete the final chapter of the Sunset Palms community, and we’re excited to welcome new residents and their stories. Although we’re building new homes, it’s the people that make all the difference and continue to rewrite the rules of retirement living.”

Sunset Palms offers resort-style amenities including a pool, gymnasium, hair salon, library, dining, bar and games rooms, BBQ facilities and a community vegetable garden, as well as care and support services, home and garden maintenance and a community bus for local trips.
