Friendship and healing come with a cherry on top for a special choir

At Cherry Tree Grove in Croydon, community life hits all the right notes, and recently a talented group of residents shared their heartfelt story of belonging and friendship with The Age.

Among them is Marion Vaughan, who just two days after moving into the community, joined the village choir, The Cherry Tones. A lifelong love of music quickly connected her with fellow chorister Mike Lewis, and they soon discovered they shared more than a passion for singing - both were London-born and migrated to Australia in the 1960s.

What started as harmonising at rehearsals grew into a deep friendship. As a co-convener of the choir, Marion stepped in to help keep things running when Mike was caring for his wife, Deanne. Through some of life’s hardest moments including loss, illness and recovery, the choir became a source of comfort, strength, and joy for both of them. When Mike needed support, Marion was there with meals, music and company. When Marion was unwell more recently, choir members returned the care with thoughtful messages and small gestures that meant a great deal.

Marion and Mike continue to lead the Cherry Tones together, with the choir’s volunteer musical director Michael King, and the group of residents that Marion lovingly describes as her second family. The Cherry Tones have had some amazing recent highlights, including their festive concert in the newly renovated community centre, complete with sparkly outfits, familiar tunes, and a special appearance from Santa!

From rehearsals filled with laughter (and the occasional reminder to listen!) to performances that light up the community, the choir is a place where everyone belongs. Because at Cherry Tree Grove, music isn’t just heard, it’s felt, shared and lived. Read the full story in The Age, here.
