On 25 and 26 March, Aveo’s In Residence art exhibition brought together over 20 resident artists from communities across Melbourne, celebrating the creative talents of older Australians in a way that was both personal and profound. More than 30 original works filled the rooms of Fountain Court - mosaics, abstract watercolours, delicate eggshell art, cartoons, woodwork and more - each piece a testament to a life well-lived and passions newly discovered.
“Many resident artists hadn’t picked up a paintbrush or discovered a hidden talent until they reached retirement.” For Aveo’s State Operations Manager for Victoria, Valetta Johnston, the exhibition was about far more than art on a wall. It was a celebration of what retirement can look like when people are given the space, community and encouragement to explore.
A New Canvas for Life
“Staying mentally and physically active is incredibly important as we age,” Ms Johnston said. “Retirement should be about continuing to live life fully, discovering new interests and sharing them with others.”
Many of the artists exhibiting their work at 'In Residence' had never picked up a paintbrush or experimented with a new craft until they reached retirement. For them, the exhibition wasn’t just a showcase - it was an affirmation that it’s never too late to discover a hidden talent, or to share it with the world.
An Evening to Remember
On the evening of Wednesday 25 March, Aveo hosted an exclusive public event at Fountain Court from 3pm to 5pm, where guests were welcomed with complimentary prosecco and cananés as they explored the gallery. The event offered a rare and moving glimpse into the creativity, stories and perspectives of residents from Aveo communities across Melbourne.
The atmosphere, by all accounts, was joyful. Residents spoke about their works with pride; visitors left with a renewed perspective on what ageing with purpose truly looks like.
Life Doesn’t Slow Down
“Events like this remind us that creativity doesn’t have an age limit and life doesn’t slow down in retirement,” Ms Johnston reflected. “In many ways, it’s just getting started.”
At Aveo, we believe that a fulfilling retirement is one built around connection, purpose and the freedom to keep growing. 'In Residence' was a beautiful reminder of exactly that - and we couldn’t be prouder of every artist who shared their work with us.
