Five things that make a retirement village a community

First class facilities and a supportive, caring environment are key to fostering a vibrant community atmosphere within a retirement village according to Albany Creek retirement village resident, Thelma Whyte.

According to new research, Thelma is amongst the happiest age group in the country, with Australia’s Baby Boomers outshining the younger generations thanks to their positive outlook on life. Findings from the Aveo Positive Ageing Index show that almost one in five (19%) Australians in their 60s and 70s ranked their happiness levels as ‘high’ – more than double the number of those aged under 50 (9%). In addition, almost three quarters (72%) of this age group recognise the rich social benefits retirement villages offer such as making new friends, finding a soulmate or seeking out new adventure buddies.

Thelma describes moving into a retirement community as the ‘third chapter of her life’ having not only found companionship, but also a rich sense of community through her new-found friendships and shared interests and hobbies.

Albany Creek Retirement Village resident, Thelma Whyte shares the top five things that make a retirement village feel like a community.

1. My social circle

Companionship is something I missed after my husband passed. Once you’re on your own, it’s just you and four walls, but since moving into a retirement community, my social horizons have expanded and I have found a sense of contentedness. I’ve also found companionship since meeting Patrick, a fellow resident in the village, and it feels like the third chapter of my life. I love to socialise and that is one of my favourite things about living at Albany Creek. There is a strong sense of connectedness between residents here which creates a feeling of community and support.

2. An active life

The activities on offer at our village is really want instils a sense of community as they bring everyone together over shared interests. It’s one of the best things about village life, and I love the opportunity to socialise with friends doing an activity we enjoy.  My personal favourites are playing a game of bocce or getting to dress up and go to our village happy hour.

3. Safety

At times, living alone makes you feel vulnerable and at risk. At Albany Creek, I know my neighbours which gives me the reassurance I need.  I know that if something was to happen to me or my health, there are always people around to help.

4. Likeability from relatability

I underestimated how refreshing it would be to be around people like me. I wasn’t sure if I would find a place amongst so many   But I have actually found that because we are all in a similar circumstance, I have been able to foster strong connections with my like-minded neighbours.  We are bonded by our proximity, but more importantly by our similarities. In fact, I met my partner Patrick through our shared love of singing in the village choir.

5. Elevated amenities

Even though I loved my family home, the amenities available to me now are wonderful. Within a short stroll, I can go to the gym, visit the library, swim in the pool, play tennis or watch a movie in the theatre.  I can easily visit my favourite places and will always pass a friendly face on my way which enhances the feeling of community.
