Bocci the classic ‘game of the gods’ is a winner for the residents. One of the most popular games at Aveo Albany Creek retirement village is the weekly game of Bocci, also known as Bocce, which is a ball sport related to the boules game family. Every Thursday at 2.30 pm a group of around 30 residents gather to play Bocci for an hour. The game requires creative team work and mental stamina so it’s no surprise that after the game, a well-earned cup of tea is always on the cards. Alma Macks, Mackie Sutton and June Disantedicola are just three of the residents who enjoy the weekly Bocci games and the happy socialising that goes with it. “We have fun and laugh together and there is some good, healthy competition between us. Laughter is always the best medicine, I feel, and we have plenty of it at our weekly games,” said Alma. Mackie said, “The best thing about the Bocci group is the comradeship, as well as the challenge of the game and mixing with other residents”. According to all involved, socialising at the post-game afternoon teas is one of the most enjoyable aspects of the Bocci club, as well as sharing some delicious goodies. The Bocci group holds two competitions per year for the season championship and everyone is welcome to attend. “There is so much to enjoy about the group – the friendships and the fun, getting involved in the competitions together, socialising at the afternoon teas afterwards and meeting new residents” said June.
