If you or your loved one is living with diabetes, or you suspect you may be at risk of diabetes, there are some simple lifestyle changes you can make today to improve your health. Diabetes is an autoimmune disease that affects the body’s ability to process blood sugar (glucose). The Australian Bureau of Statistics reported around one in six people over the age of 65 are living with diabetes. The most common type of diabetes for older people is type 2, which is largely preventable.

One of the ways in which you can control diabetes is through healthy lifestyle choices. By eating a variety of foods, you can help manage your glucose, cholesterol and blood pressure. It is recommended that you consume at least five serves of vegetables and legumes and two serves of fruit every day as part of a balanced diet. The Australian guide to healthy eating can be found here.

One easy way you can control your blood sugar levels is by switching from white bread to whole grain. White bread generally has a high glycemic index which is bad news for those at risk of type 2 diabetes. Regular consumption of whole grain foods is linked to a reduction of several chronic conditions including diabetes.

Good news if you have a sweet tooth, the Australian Dietary Guidelines show that people living with diabetes can eat moderate amounts of sugar as part of a balanced diet. This means you can enjoy the occasional dessert.

It is also recommended that you drink plenty of water every day. Regular exercise for 20-30 minutes, 5 days per week is also important to keep your body strong.
